Congratulations! Whether it’s a condo in Dupont Circle or a Colonial in Chevy Chase, moving into a new home in DC is an exciting time. Once the boxes are (mostly) unpacked, it’s time to get out an explore your new neighborhood. If you’re in the DC area, there are bound to be dozens of activities and charming spots to check out, so it’s easy to be overwhelmed. Here are a few tips for diving into your new ‘hood!

It’s easy to be glued to your phone when power-walking to Metro, but this is the time to observe and learn. Keep your eyes peeled for concert flyers, pop up shops, local comedy shows, and more. Looks like you’ve got a busy weekend planned with zero effort!

When all else fails, don’t be afraid to just go in! If you’re passing by a place that looks right up your alley, don’t waste time trying to plan a specific outing (then forgetting and rescheduling said plan). Labor Day Weekend in the District

We're sad to see summer go, but we are looking forward to a three day weekend!

Soak in the last of the summer rays and paddle board or kayak along the Potomac! Transition into nighttime and bask in the stellar views of DC and head to a rooftop bar to cap off the weekend! Crabs Galore!

The National Harbor is celebrating Maryland’s infamous crab eats. This Saturday, head over to The Plateau for the Chesapeake Crab & Beer Festival! Over 65,000 crabs will be available- yes, 65,000. There will also of course be craft beer and to top off the festival vibe, live music.

Smithsonian Folk Festival

Come join the melting pot and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Smithsonian Folk Festival! The annual festival celebrates international cultures and truly enhances your knowledge of diversity and multilingualism.

There is a variety of food vendors, performances and games. There is also the famous marketplace where you can purchase jewelry, clothing and art. A fun experience for adults and kids alike- circus performances will be held and there is even a night-time dance party!

Since it’s the 50th anniversary of the festival, there will be a special exhibition ‘50 Years/50 Objects.’ It honors cultural traditions with a curated collection of treasures and storied-objects.

Game of Thrones Pop-Up Bar

Winter has arrived! - thankfully without the actual frozen air. Drink Company’s latest pop-up bar features a Game of Thrones theme! Fans of the HBO series get to immerse themselves in the Seven Kingdoms, where different parts of the bar are inspired by the numerous realms in the show. The bar is surrounded with a smoke-breathing dragon sculpture, Hall of Faces and an Iron Throne. Sip on cocktails appropriately named, such as ‘Lady Marmont’ or ‘Dothraquiri’. To top it off, the soundtrack of the show will be playing in the background to truly set the Game of Thrones vibes. Patrons and staff alike even enhance their experience by coming in full armor or dressed as Khaleesi.

ArTecHouse

DC’s newest art exhibition, ArTecHouse is the newest destination for a mesmerizing experience. Boasting 30 foot ceilings in a 15,000 square foot underground location, the exhibition combines the elements of art, tech and house. The projections interact with the visitors surrounding them; for example, if you move past one the installations, the images will move along with you. Enhance your senses and visit the innovative art scene!

Freedom Happens Now 5K

Human trafficking in the United States is very much a reality, however there is not much information about how and where it happens. We do know that approximately 21 million victims are affected and we need to find support for the victims when they are rescued from these traumatic events.

Polaris Freedom Happens Now is an organization that determines to raise awareness of human trafficking and endorses efforts to end it. This Saturday June 24, Polaris is hosting a 5K run to raise funds for its organization.

The Hirshhorn is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Yoko Ono’s ‘Wish Tree’ installation which allows museum-goers to contribute their wishes in Ono’s focus on peace. Starting June 17th through September 17th, Hirshhorn Museum will exhibit exclusive pieces of Yoko’s most legendary and emotive installations and performances.
